Minnesota Features in International Publications
International publications, both travel trade and consumer media, regularly feature items about travel in  Minnesota.  We intend to share some of the mentions with you on this page.  Here you will find articles from publications in our focused markets: Canada, France, Germany, Japan Nordic countries and the UK, as well as the occasional mention from other markets that show an increasing interest in what Minnesota has to offer.

Canadian Traveller JUL2008 p72: America Yours To Discover Minnesota overview, featuring what’s new, top attractions, sample events , hidden gems and fast facts.  This full page feature has an ad equivalency value of US$6,005.
Canadian Traveller MAY2008 p54: A Strong Loonie Nickelodeon Universe.  The half page feature has an ad equivalency value of US$2,775.
Canadian Traveler is distributed to 20,000 travel professionals across Canada.  With regular features on U.S. destinations, the July publication is always branded the America Yours to Discover edition.

UK Market the largest overseas market for Minnesota
Travel Trade Gazette 29MAY2009 Great Lakes Market. This industry publication reaches nearly 125,000 travel trade professionals throughout the UK. A recent fam trip coordinated by GLNA yielded this article, consisting of impressions cast by fam participants. The ad equivalency rate for this 1.5 page piece is $39,411 ($26,275/page).

Chat Magazine JUN2008 Your Holiday: Minneapolis
Chat is a weekly, national women’s magazine with a circulation of 530,000 and readership of 1.2 million.  It features a travel piece in each issue.  The ad rate equivalency for the 1.5 page article above is US$35,000.

Independent 05JUL2008 p19: Super Shopper… Mall of America
The Independent boasts a circulation of 234,000 throughout the UK, with a readership of 733,000. The paper’s Traveller Section is published Saturdays.  Average personal income is US$75,000.  The ad rate equivalency for the one page article above is US$26,000.

German Market - the 2nd largest European market to Minnesota.  Efforts often reach other German-speaking markets, namely Austria and Switzerland.
America Journal is a bi-monthly magazine targeted at travelers from the German speaking countries (Germany, Austria & Switzerland) who are, by definition, actively considering a U.S. journey.  It has a circulation of 41,000 and readership of 200,000.
America JournalMAY2009 Actionhelden in Fish TV (Action Heroes in Fish TV). This five-page article focuses on the process and culture surrounding ice fishing on Mille Lacs Lake.  The ad rate equivalency is $30,000 ($6,000/page).
America JournalJAN-FEB2009 Ein Fischbuefett am Ende des Eises (A Fish Buffet at a Break in the Ice). This article features the annual winter feasting on the Mississippi at the National Eagle Center. The ad rate equivalency for the two-page article is US$12,000($6,000/page).
America JournalMAR-APR2008 Fluss Ohne Grenzen (River Without Borders) This piece covers the Mississippi River from the headwaters through Minnesota, with mentions of commerce and wildlife, and the communities of Bemidji, Little Falls, Minneapolis, Saint Paul, Red Wing, Wabasha, and along Lake Pepin to Winona.  The ad rate equivalency for the nine page article is US$54,000($6,000/page).
America JournalJAN-FEB2008 Puls der Seen (Pulse of the Great Lakes) A 30 page article encompassing the Great Lakes States, includes a four page section on Minnesota, featuring Duluth, Moorhead, Minneapolis, Saint Paul, Mall of America and Neu Ulm, and two page wrap-up of the region.
The ad rate equivalency for the four page portion is US$2,400 ($6,000/page).
America JournalNOV-DEC2007 Wohnen auf den Mississippi (Living on the Mississippi) This 1/2 page article on the Covington Inn, Saint Paul, has an ad rate equivalency of US$3,000.
German Lions Promotion 2009.  This three-page publication was distributed to Lions members throughout German-speaking Europe in anticipation of their 2009 convention in Minneapolis/Saint Paul.

Die Zeit is Germany’s largest weekly newspaper, with a circulation of 653,533 and readership of 2.1 million.  Meaning “The Time“, it features in-depth articles and is considered highbrow in its demographics.
Die Zeit 16APR09 Mall zu Fuß Gehen (Mall on Foot), focuses on the offerings of Mall of America from the perspective of the early morning mall walkers. The ad rate equivalency for this article is US$38,900.
Die Zeit 19FEB2009 Die mit dem Wolf heult (Howl with the Wolves), features the wilderness and advocacy opportunity to visitors to the International Wolf Center in Ely. The ad rate equivalency for this two-page article US$77,800.

Japanese Market - the second largest overseas for Minnesota

Ocean Life JUN09 Down the River, pp194-200, follows attractions along the Mississippi River from headwaters through the entire state. Ocean Life has a monthly circulation of 50,000 and is geared towards males with annual income over $200,000. Many are boat owners who resort life and international travel. Ad rate equivalency is$57,000 ($9,500/page).

NWA World Traveler SEP-OCT2008 Wonderful Minnesota! This article features Minnesota at-large, with a greater focus on the Twin Cities and Mall of America.  The Japanese-language inflight magazine will be seen by approximately 450,000 passengers on NWA flights between Japan and the U.S. during its two-month run.  The ad rate equivalency value is $10,666.

Nikkei Shimbun 08APR2008 Art Stroll References “Great Ukiyo-e Masters”, a collection at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and the city’s extensive arts offerings.  Nikkei Shimbun is Japan’s only national paper, and the world’s largest business and economic daily, with a circulation of over 3 million.  The paper also covers science, technology, culture and Japanese social trends.  The ad rate equivalency is US$8,340.

Korean Market - presently a secondary market for EMT, however, with its recent admission to the Visa Waiver Program it could become a major market for Minnesota.

Chosun Ilbo Daily 21AUG2008 Article in travel and leisure section of Magazine 2+, distributed in the paper each Thursday.  The Chosun Ilbo has a circulation of nearly 2.5 million.  It was written by journalist, Song Hyejin, following  a fam trip here in the summer of 2008.

Netherlands Market - a secondary European market, with growth potential resulting from the NWA/KLM nonstop service between hub cities.

AmericA Magazin OCT08 Ins & Outs: Minneapolis This publication focuses on destinations and culture of the United States.  The 6 page feature on Minneapolis attractions bears an ad rate equivalency of US$11,300.

Travelution OCT08 Destination Update: Minnesota A two-page spread featuring updates on the Twin CIties and promoting nature offerings statewide.  Includes mention in article overview.  Travelution is a travel trade magazine published in The Netherlands. It reaches 100% of the Dutch travel industry - over 10,000 travel professionals. As a respected travel resource it has a long shelf life. Special editions such as The USA Special Report in which this Minnesota profile appears are often kept for a year or more.  Ad equivalency  of this exposure: US$3,850.

Thius DEC08/JAN09 This advertorial appears in the December/January issue of thuis (At Home) magazine.  thuis has a circulation of 120,000 copies. This edition is the official Vakantiebeurs edition. Vakantiebeurs is The Netherlands’ largest trade and consumer travel show, attracting over 135,000 visitors each January.  Cost of participation was US$2,025 and ad equivalency  of this article is US$28,000.

Fuldaer Zeitung - Reise Journal 16MAY2009 p32: Barfuß über den “Old Man River” (Barefoot Across “Old Man River”). Exploring the first 500 miles of the Mississippi River through Minnesota. The paper has a circulation of 60,000 and readership of 150,000 in the Fulda area near Frankfurt am Main.
