About two-thirds of the U.S. population ages 3 and older now use the Internet, according to eMarketer. While Internet penetration varies considerably by state, Minnesota currently ranks in the top ten in the U.S.

It turns out that New Hampshire had the highest household Internet penetration rate of any state in October 2007, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s "Current Population Survey," as cited in the National Telecommunications and Information Administration’s "Networked Nation: Broadband in America" report.

Minnesota ranks 10th in the U.S. in total internet penetration with more than 66% of households using the Internet at least once a month. Other states in the top ten include Alaska, Washington, Vermont, Colorado, and Oregon. Mississippi ranked dead last among Internet usage in the U.S.

Overall Internet user penetration, is current at 64%, expected to rise to over 71% in 2012. Given that most of the country is now wired for online access of some sort, physical proximity to Internet connections is no longer the prime factor in online penetration.
