2007-08 Statewide Economic Impact Report
Travelers in Minnesota spent over $12 billion in Minnesota between June 2007 and May 2008, according to a recent report prepared for Explore Minnesota Tourism and the University of Minnesota Tourism Center, in partnership with Minnesota’s regional tourism associations. The traveler spending estimate is included in a series of reports that resulted from a 12-month study of travel in Minnesota.

The $12.1 billion was spent during 39 million person-visits in Minnesota, supporting 271,500 full-time equivalent jobs, $6.7 billion in resident income (wages, salaries and proprietary income), $1.5 billion in state government revenues and $0.5 billion in local government revenues.

More than half of the spending was by travelers who stayed overnight in hotels, motels or B&Bs. Food, shopping and recreation combined account for three-quarters of all the dollars spent by travelers. Popular activities for travelers to Minnesota included dining out, shopping, attending events, and sightseeing or driving for pleasure.

More than a third (37%) of total traveler expenditures were spent in the summer season. Travelers spent $4.5 billion in the summer season (June through August); $3.0 billion, or 25%, in the fall (September through November); $2.8 billion, or 24%, in winter (December through March) and $1.7 billion, or 14%, in spring (April and May).

The statewide economic impact report was compiled by Davidson-Peterson Associates, and was based on telephone interviews with lodging managers and Minnesota residents and in-person interviews with travelers. The report also provides information by types of lodging and other demographics, and includes analysis of travelers by Minnesota region. Additional reports in the series provide a statewide profile of travelers in Minnesota, regional economic impacts and traveler profiles, and economic impact estimates at the county level. All of the reports can be found in the research section of www.industry.exploreminnesota.com by clicking on the "Economic Impact" and "Traveler Profiles" pull-down options of the "Research" tab. The reports are also posted on the University of Minnesota Tourism Center’s website – www.tourism.umn.edu.
