Highlights for 2007, the latest year for which information is available from Statistics Canada:
- Total Canadian travel to Minnesota in 2007 was flat (i.e., up 0.4% from 2006) at 2.65 million person-visits, while total spending by Canadian visitors was up 12% to $278 million. These growth rates were both down considerably compared with growth rates in 2006 (i.e., 5.8% for travel and 22% for spending).
- Overnight travel volume of Canadian travelers in Minnesota in 2007 was down nearly 7% to 573 thousand person-visits, but total spending by overnight visitors was up 18%. Spending per person-visit for overnight visitors was up 27% to $318.
- Day travel volume from Canada to Minnesota in 2007 was up 2.5% to 2.1 million. However, very different from overnight visitors, total spending by day travelers was up only 1%. Spending per person-visit for day travelers was down 1% to $46. These low spending growth rates for day travelers in 2007 follow exceptionally high growth rates in 2006 (i.e., 34% for total spending and 26% for spending per person-visit by day travelers).
Tables with detailed and summary statistics covering Canadian travelers to Minnesota can be found at www.industry.exploreminnesota.com/side2/research-reports/, under “Traveler Profiles”.
In addition, the U.S. Department of Commerce includes Minnesota in tables of comparative statistics for Canadian travelers to U.S. states. The tables provide only statistics for overnight Canadian travelers, thereby missing statistics on day travel that are more substantial for border states like Minnesota. Tables covering overnight travelers to the U.S. from 2004 through 2007 are available on the Office of Travel and Tourism Industries website at:
